HEBRON - Mary Kate McElroy and Jon Anderson were on familiar ground.
The Fort Frye cross country duo competed in the OHSAA Early Season Invitational at National Trail Raceway in Hebron Saturday. This was a 5,000 meter preview race on the state cross country meet course, which both ran on last November.
McElroy, a sophomore now, finished first in the girls' division of the early season invite with a clocking of 20 minutes, 36 seconds. This was consistent with her time at state where covered the distance in 20:04.24.
Anderson, a senior, also had a good early boys' run with a time of 17:22.05, good for seventh place. At state, he earned All-Ohio status with a third-place finish in 16:10.38.
Overall as a team, the Jason Lipot-coached Lady Cadets were fourth with 161 points. Following McElroy were Katelin Hart, Reagan Skinner, Jessi Callihan and Natalie Hart, respectively.
The Fort Frye boys' team, which is preseason ranked No. 19 in the OATCCC Division III cross country poll, also featured Ford McElroy, Owen Young, Liam Thompson, and Raymond Cooper in that order after Anderson. The Cadets as a team posted 391 points.

The Dugan Hill-led Caldwell girls finished ahead of Fort Frye in third place with 141 points. The Lady Redskins were paced by Katie Saling, who ran a 21:20.65, good for ninth place. After Saling, there were Lindsey Furr, Lexi Waller, Julie ghanna Feldner, Anika Van Hoose, and Hannah Pfeffer.
On the boys' side, Tanner Harding had Caldwell's best clocking of 18:19.15 and a 23rd-place finish. Then, there were Seasn Whetstone, Benton Parmiter, Jacob Niswonger, Sean Rataiczak and Collin Banks, respectively.
As a team, the Redskins, who are preseason ranked No. 17 in the OATCCC D3 cross country poll, placed seventh with 255 points.
Belpre also was an entrant in the OHSAA early run. The Jim Cunningham-coached Golden Eagle harriers were led by freshman Keller Windland (17:41.98), Cray Sistrunk, and Kyle Windland.
The boys and girls cross country teams of Belpre, Caldwell, and Fort Frye are all scheduled to compete in the 15th annual Elizabeth S. Broughton Memorial Invitational at the Broughton Nature & Wildlife Area Saturday at 10 a.m. The event will be hosted by Marietta High.
