A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

The War on Leeches. No, Wait. It's the War on TEACHERS.

Posted on July 19, 2011 by Chris Savage (aka Eclectablog)

IT’S WARRRR!!!! It’s been a rough year for teachers in this country, particularly in the Midwest. Wisconsin notwithstanding, teachers in Michigan may be taking it on the chin from Republicans more than any other group in the country. Last Thursday, we learned that GOP House Speaker Jase Bolger’s next legislative target is teachers’ pensions.

“Seldom has the raw power and unbridled selfishness of teacher unions been more on display than it is today in state capitols around the country. Teachers led the union riot that shut down Wisconsin's state government for more than two weeks, making legislators afraid to enter government buildings while angry mobs defaced public property and shouted threats against elected officials.”

Much is rightly made about the Republican War on Women. But the Republicans are fighting a more deliberate battle against the poor. It is audacious, insensitive and ugly. Republicans have clearly decided that the War on the Poor is good politics.

Today, 46 million Americans live in poverty, or 15 percent of the population. Some 20 percent of all children live in poverty. Nearly 40 percent of black children do.

“It is no coincidence that the thirty-year decline in U.S. K–12 education and the simultaneous surge in education spending began at the same time the modern teacher unions were created. Today, the National Education Association has nearly three million members. Its agenda is not to provide better teaching in schools; it is to provide more money and benefits for teachers -- and, above all, for itself.”

The Republican Party, both at the national level and in many states, has declared war on education. Here are just a few of the things that happen when cuts are made to education funding at the state level: •Teaching positions are cut, resulting in larger class size and less individual attention for your children. •Fewer extra-curricular activities are offered, limiting the opportunities for your child to participate in the sort of activities valued by college admissions officers. •Fewer special ed and gifted teachers are available, limiting opportunities for children with special needs. •Fewer nurses and maintenance workers are hired and building and bus maintenance is deferred, making school less safe for your children. •Salary freezes will lead the best teachers to leave for better paying jobs. •As the quality of the school district in which you live declines, your property values will decline. Funding education should be a top priority for all states. It represents a

“In this path-breaking book, Terry M. Moe demonstrates that the answers to these questions have a great deal to do with teachers unions —which are by far the most powerful forces in American education and use their power to promote their own special interests at the expense of what is best for kids.”

The Republican War on Public Education

Our Public School System is under attack, not just in Florida or San Diego but in Orange County as well. Â There are experiments happening all over the US to test exactly what the best means would be to destroy our public schools and right now, the easiest seems to be from the inside out.In the Capistrano School District in South Orange County

For years, teachers’ unions have claimed that education reformers are mounting a “war on teachers.” Now, in the Midwest and Republican-dominated states across the country, we are witnessing what a war on teachers really looks like!!!

The Republican War on Higher Education: Abraham Lincoln Weeps

Across the country Republican governors have announced major cuts to higher education budgets that will significantly alter issues of access to quality public education and excellence in what those programs can offer. Yesterday Graham Spanier, the President Penn State University, had this to say about the 52.8% cut announced by Governor Tom Corbett:

The Republican war on education

By Michael J.W. Stickings

Paul Ryan came out yesterday and expressed his support for Rahm Emanuel against Chicago teachers. Like his running mate, he's trying to score some political points by beating up unions and trying to tie President Obama to this particular one, even though the president has stayed out of it so far, refusing to take a stand one way or the other.

It's the Republican politics of vilification, this week directed at teachers, who are being made out to be overpaid, good-for-nothing layabouts wallowing in moral degradation.

The Republican War on Education

39

By Ruth Conniff, May 2011 issue

The public outpouring was incredible. People flooded into the capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin, from the urban neighborhoods of Milwaukee and from tiny towns in the northern and western corners of the state. They came to oppose Republican plans that would wipe out rural school districts, drain resources from city schools, and dismantle an entire statewide system of public education.
