A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

"And every year, those city pensions grow by 3 percent. Records show the top earners are:"

"James McNally, vice president of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150. He receives nearly $115,000 a year even though at the time he retired, in 2008, he had not worked for the city in more than 13 years. He was only 51 when he started collecting a city pension. By the time he turns 78, he will have received roughly $4 million from the city laborers' fund."

Reminder: I respectfully decline answering any questions from an alleged 60+ year old long-time retired dues exempt union husband of a NEA union boss, who ‘for over two years’ has had to resort to repetitive name-calling, insults and wild claims.

“In Chicago, teacher union leaders have won the lottery of municipal benefits. Twenty-three union leaders will be receiving a total of $56,000,000 in retirement. For most, these pension benefits will be greater than the salaries that they made while employed by the union. On the 1991 law that has secured these benefits, the Chicago Tribune reports:”

“As the video explains, teachers who want to teach in public schools often don’t have the option of keeping their union dues instead of funding political causes. This helps to explain the union’s incentive to grow the public sector workforce, even if the growth in spending does not result in improved outcomes for taxpayers.”
