A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Well here you go but head , it isn't going to get anymore credible than the "Bureau of Labor Statistics" According to a January 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, workers who belong to a union typically earn higher pay than non-union workers doing the same kind of job. Although it varies based on sector and occupation, the overall averages are striking.

$917 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of union members.

$717 = Median weekly earnings in 2010 of non-union workers.

That's a yearly difference in salary of $10,400 for union members vs. non-union members.

Union members earn an average of $4.95 more per hour - which equates to a yearly difference of $10,300. (we are ohio.co m)

Why does a right-wing republican repeater feel the need to abase unions and their members when unions have done so very much for all labor ? Wouldn't be so bad except for your total ignorance of unions and their affairs ! For "people" like wrongriki , who cant accept the facts that prove them wrong , its a sad state of affairs that even after being debunked they keep up this constant barrage of ignorant right-wing crappola !Wrongriki and others like it are all that's wrong with these forums ! Speaking of legitimacy , wrongriki is a welfare addicted non working putz that thinks its an expert on workers rights ! Would'nt you think that to be an expert on work you'd have to at least have a job ?? Still using lies and half-truths in the typical republican way ! Seems funny that if this was a good thing for labor they would be supporting it but they aren't are they ??We are ohio. co m

This outright mission to destroy unions and democracy is personal ! unless we stand up and fight he and his republican masters will take labor back a 100 yrs ! The republicans want us all to be like a third world country and give up the rights and dignity so sorely won !We are Ohio.co m

The whole of your arguement is that people dont have a choice RIGHT ?Well seems to me that if a person either chooses to work at A: a union shop or B: a non-union shop they are making a conscience choice ! SO EXACTLY HOW IS MAKING A CHOICE NOT A CHOICE !!! And if this fact is correct ( and it is ) then wouldnt that make your whole right-wing bullsh#t fest a lie ??•The average worker—unionized or not—working in a right-to-work state earns approximately $1,500 less per year than a similar worker in a state without such a law.Right to Work For Less By ThinkProgress War Room on Dec 10, 2012 at 5:26 pm "we are ohio.co m".
