A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Regurgitate your lies all you want . . .

Where is the alleged name-calling and insults?

. . .

TRTUH is Munster’s problem is he starts with name-calling, insults, and wild claims.

If you tell the TRUTH you shouldn't need any "name-calling, insults, and wild claims".

FACT: Criminals and the mentally ill ignore Gun Laws just as Munster ignores the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy with his name-calling and insults. SEE: Munster postings for an example of this TRUTH.

'Right-to-Work' Laws Explained, Debunked And Demystified

English: Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (Photo credit: Wikipedia) One of the enduring myths of legislation designed to bring ‘right-to-work’ laws to the states is the notion that these laws actually have something to do with the right to work. They decidedly do not. While—as we will see—the misnomer has nothing whatsoever to do [...] Rick Ungar Rick Ungar, Contributor Dec 11, 2012 Look it up ! Oh I see . . wrongriki thinks . . . that the Taft -Hartley act doesn't cover everything that it keeps lying about !According to federal law workers already have their CHOICE and rights! But poor ignorant wrongriki refuses to accept the FACTS !! How typical, if things don't fit your lies , deny them !! Right out of the republican playbook !

FACT: Union bosses ignore or sidestep the Taft -Hartley act just like Munster ignores the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and criminals and the mentally ill ignore the Gun Laws.

For example . . .

“Orr was forced to pay for political lobbying and a union strike fund despite the fact that she is not a union member.”

“This isn't the first time the union has tangled with Orr, either. In 2009, UNITE HERE officials agreed to refund a substantial chunk of Orr's union dues after they were caught using her money for political activism.”

Says Will Collins of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, “The case for right-to-work has always rested on the importance of defending worker freedom, but right-to-work laws also have a proven track record of encouraging economic growth.”

The often-cited argument that right-to-work laws, somehow, defend worker freedom is an awfully tough case to make—as the only apparent freedom provided workers via these laws is the freedom to get something for nothing.

And not everyone agrees that the laws actually do bring business into a state.

According to a report written by economists Gordon Lafer and Sylvia Allegretto reviewing the results of Oklahoma’s right-to-work laws, and published by the Economic Policy Institute, right-to-work laws do not always work out quite so well.

Abby Rapoport, writing in the American Spectator, describes the results of the Lafer/Allegretto study—

“Rather than increasing job opportunities, the state saw companies relocate out of Oklahoma. In high-tech industries and those service industries “dependent on consumer spending in the local economy” the laws appear to have actually damaged growth. At the end of the decade, 50,000 fewer Oklahoma residents had jobs in manufacturing. Perhaps most damning, Lafer and Allegretto could find no evidence that the legislation had a positive impact on employment rates.

“It will not bring new jobs in, but it will result in less wages and benefits for everybody including non-union workers,” says Lafer.”
