| Latest Post: Started By: Rank: Category A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified? As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above" Member CommentsMunsterLook ignorant one , haven't you ever heard of Taft-Hartly ? One has to wonder , does wrongriki ever look at anything that isn't a biased republican crap factory ? Talk about brainwashed and indoctrinated !!! MunsterUpdated: Right-to-work legislation put down hard, CONCORD— For the third time in three years, right-to-work legislation was defeated, this time when the House voted 212-141 Wednesday, killing the bill. **** After two years of heated and bitter battles when former House Speaker William O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, made right-to-work one of his priorities, lawmakers this year spent about 45 minutes debating House Bill 323, which would prohibit employers and labor organizations from including fees for non-union members in collective bargaining agreements. ***** Opponents said HB 322 is an attack on organized labor that will drive down wages and destroy middle class families in a race to the bottom.
