A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Wrongriki , you are all that is wrong with things like these forums with your constant barrage of right -wing propaganda and bullsh^t ! Then complaining that your being picked on when all you post is debunked and refuted ! Since you insist on being the victim you should look that up on your right-wing websites !!When you persist in this mis-guided strategy of victimhood you should at least see if you qualify for a mental disability

Also , Ive checked around and haven't found an official of the union making 500 thousand ! As usual wrongriki tends to stretch the truth !

Apples to oranges ! What the ever ignorant wrongriki doesn't say is officers in international unions represent thousands of members . In order to do their job well they must be equipped with the knowledge to negotiate for the body of the union ! I don't know about the Know Nothing Expert but I prefer to have a person working on my behalf that is respected and knows what their doing ! I suppose wrongriki would like to have the janitor negotiate for it ! When compared to the pay of CEO's of even small companie the officals are underpaid !

"We are Ohio". c om Republican stooges like wrongriki have a hard time when confronted with the truth , it tends to make them look even more foolish and idiotic than normal !The main thing is wrongriki and others of that ilk have no validity because they have never had a job much less a union job so exactly why do they think they know it all ?? Well they dont ! Just a Know Nothing Expert

This LIE has been exposed !!! Workers have a choice and most do pick to work at a union shop because they are assured that they have work-place safety, and better pay and benefits !A quote for the ages and fits nicely here !~~~Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.~~ Albert Einstein The truth doesnt sit well with "people" who are used to telling half-truths and out right lies !End the republicans war on labor !!! They already have their personal free choice ! They can choose either to A: work at a union shop or B: work at any non-union shop ! Considering 87% of jobs are non-union , and if you dont like unions then its clear that it would be easier to find a non-union job !Why get a job at a union shop ? "we are ohio****"

"we are ohio".co m Seems to me and most others that your afraid of the truth ! When a person CHOOSES to go to work , they either CHOOSE to work at NO#1 Union shop or they CHOOSE to work at a non-union shop ! So they are CHOOSING , now why does wrongriki want to try and cover that fact up ? Its because that makes its blather nothing but LIES !!Remember the republican mantra " deny, deflect, mis-lead and lie "we are ohio ".co m

Do you really think that trying to end workers freedom will make them work better ?Come on , lets talk some more about CHOICES !! You know the Choice that workers make when they go to work and either CHOOSE to work union or CHOOSE to work non union ! Now exactly how is it that this CHOICE isn't a CHOICE ?? Every Worker has a choice to where they work !Either at Union shop or they CHOOSE to work at a non union shop ,its their CHOICE!! we are ohio.co m

How does it feel wrongriki to whine about your "freerider" bullsh&t all the the while collecting welfare ( A free ride ) ! Typical republican !

Posted 12 days ago.

Munster

The whole of your arguement is that people dont have a choice RIGHT ?Well seems to me that if a person either chooses to work at A: a union shop or B: a non-union shop they are making a conscience choice ! SO EXACTLY HOW IS MAKING A CHOICE NOT A CHOICE !!! And if this fact is correct ( and it is ) then wouldnt that make your whole right-wing bullsh#t fest a lie ??•The average worker—unionized or not—working in a right-to-work state earns approximately $1,500 less per year than a similar worker in a state without such a law.Right to Work For Less By ThinkProgress War Room on Dec 10, 2012 at 5:26 pm "right to work is wrong". c om

And yet the Know Nothing Expert still cant wrap its pea brain around the fact that as retiree's no former active union members pay dues ! So all its typical half-truths and lies don't mean anything ! Of course we would expect that sort of mis-leading crap from wrongriki ! And just why would anybody care about what a non-working leach on society has to say on unions ? It has no experience and the only info it gets is from right-wing garbage factories !
