| Latest Post: Started By: Rank: Category A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified? As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above" Member CommentsMunsterWhat wrongriki is trying to say in these forum topics is this . . . it will get the last word in almost every topic even if he has to post more of his right-wing propaganda and repetitive nonsense. Utterly typical of a “FREE-RIDER”! “since I retired I am not obligated anymore , its a curtesy. MunsterMyth: Unions are political organizations that elect Democrats. Fact: Unions do a lot more than politics. Most of unions’ work involves fighting for good contracts, helping workers improve their lives and standing up for all working families. Through their unions, workers support candidates who support working families’ issues and who work for good laws. IUOE's political work is not about electing Democrats or Republicans—it’s about electing people who stand up for working people. Myth: Unions force workers out on strike often. Fact: Workers in IUOE and most other unions vote whether or not to strike. Ninety-nine percent of IUOE contract negotiations are settled without a strike. No one ever wants a strike. Posted 17 days ago. MunsterMyths and Facts About Unions Myth: Unions are outside, special-interest groups. Fact: Workers are the union. A union is simply a democratic organization of working people standing up for their rights on the job and in society. Unions also bring people together in the community to stand up for issues that matter to all working people. Myth: Unions mean more conflict in the workplace. Fact: Unions can make the workplace a more harmonious place to work. A union contract allows the company and workers to sit down as equals and discuss problems as they come up. Without a union, workers’ lives are often in more turmoil because they have to deal with more favoritism and less economic security. Myth: Companies close due to unions. Fact: Companies close for economic reasons—and the vast majority of companies that close are nonunion. Some companies, however, like to keep this myth alive by illegally threatening workers who attempt to form a union ! Posted 17 days ago. MunsterTrumka said the deficit hawks in corporate America are trying to “scare” voters and “distract attention from America’s real economic problems.” The AFL-CIO released Monday its 2012 “Paywatch” survey of the compensation of 350 CEOs with companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) index. Their compensation averaged $12.3 million last year, 354 times more than what a typical American earns according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Posted 17 days ago. MunsterApples to oranges !
