A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

Lets end this republican war on working people “Right-to-work” laws are outdated and a throw-back to the anti-union agenda of another era. “Right-to-work” state laws are redundant and unneeded when the current federal law is actually examined. “Right-to-work” laws represent destructive economic development policy guided by extreme partisan politics. The goal should be to raise the standard of living for hard-working buckeye families, not lower it. Hard-working buckeye families deserve better than an antiquated law designed to raise corporate profits and lower worker wages and benefits. "Right to work for less" . c om

"Unions sole revenue stream is from union dues – no members, no dues; no dues, no revenue"~~~wrongriki~~~ Finally you admit what this is all about ! The republican war on unions !! After all this bullsh#t about CHOICE ( which I've proven they already have )wrongriki fully admits that the republicans aim has nothing to do with helping Joe lunchbox and all to do with limiting union donations to candidates of their CHOICE !!We are Ohio .co m !!

“The euphemism that OEA is “partnering” with We Are Ohio is clearly meant to maintain the facade of We Are Ohio as an independent “citizen-driven” group. OEA is the largest donor to We Are Ohio, which has received more than 95 percent of its funding from OEA, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, and other labor unions.”

“Furthermore, nearly half of the “community-based” organization’s funding has come from unions outside Ohio.”

scrappile ~ “now you will have free riders getting rights and better wages on the backs of others” ~ scrappile

“I discovered that there is no free rider problem unless a union explicitly chooses to create free riders.”

“In other words, unions can completely eliminate the free rider problem by choosing to negotiate contracts only for union members.”

The deception of ‘Union Conservatives’The Crackinac Center is at it again, this time extolling the virtues of a group called “Union Conservatives.” According to the Mighty Crack, The Crackinac Center is at it again, this time extolling the virtues of a group called “Union Conservatives.” According to the Mighty Crack,Troubled by union dues being used for politics? Terry Bowman is ok with the fact that his tax dollars are used to strengthen conservative politics. He’s planning on launching “Union Conservatives” and “Union Liberty” as non-profits so that he can avoid paying taxes on them. Typical conservative wanting to push his politics on other people while freeloading through society. But, details.

Why does a right-wing republican repeater feel the need to abase unions and their members when unions have done so very much for all labor ? Wouldn't be so bad except for your total ignorance of unions and their affairs ! For "people" like wrongriki , who cant accept the facts that prove them wrong , its a sad state of affairs that even after being debunked they keep up this constant barrage of ignorant right-wing crappola !Wrongriki and others like it are all that's wrong with these forums !
