A new documentary film, "Looking for Superman" suggests that American education is severly flawed. Is this view justified?

As a former history teacher, I believe that the majority of today's public issues are rooted in the quality - or lack thereof - of American education. Never in my own memory have I noticed so many students (and adults) who are so uninformed about even the most basic facts of history, civics, geography ... Recent studies suggest that U.S. schools rank well below other nations in the disciplines of math and science ... "Waiting for Superman" (which needs to be shown locally) says that the "blame" or "responsibility" for this sad state of affairs rests upon several factors - i.e. the distractions of TV and computer games; teachers' unions that support "tenure" for some incompetent teachers; uncaring parents; "pressure groups" that demonize public education to promote private, sectarian schools; politicians who burden schools with "unfunded mandates" like "No Child Left Behind" ... Or is it "all of the above"

"we are ohio".co m Right on schedule , let the whining and crying begin ! You see whenever wrongriki cant come up with a valid arguement this is what we all have to endure ! Doesnt change the facts though , whenever a person goes to work they make a CHOICE either to work at a union shop or they CHOOSE to work at a non-union shop ! Either way they CHOOSE ! And since these rabid republicans say its all about CHOICE then they must be and are LYING ! "we are ohio".co m

“In Chicago, teacher union leaders have won the lottery of municipal benefits. Twenty-three union leaders will be receiving a total of $56,000,000 in retirement. For most, these pension benefits will be greater than the salaries that they made while employed by the union. On the 1991 law that has secured these benefits, the Chicago Tribune reports:”

"we are ohio".co m Make no mistake about it ! It's not some ironically named website it's the republican party !! They will lie and mis-lead to try and make it sound like there are thousands of workers trapped in unionism but the truth is most all union members are perfectly happy to be union ! This is the typical republican tactic of deny , deflect and lie thats used to demonize something they want changed !"we are ohio".co m

“You authorize a stranger to think for you, speak for you, act for you and make decisions concerning your wages, benefits, and working conditions – as well as things outside of the workplace that affect you and your family”

“* The union becomes the voice for the employee.”

“* It is the union’s interest – and not the employees’ – that becomes all important.”

"we are ohio". c om Lets end the republiucan war on workers !!The truth doesnt sit well with "people" who are used to telling half-truths and out right lies ! And the truth is a person either CHOOSES to go to work at A: a union shop or B: CHOOSES to go to work at a non-union shop ! Either way a person gets to choose and since thats the whole point of you "peoples" arguement it lets all the air out of your ballon now dont it ! what this does is tell everyone the real reason for these attacks ! All the right wants is to limit the unions ability to bargain collectively and choke off their donations to candidates who they support ! "we are ohio". c om

“As the video explains, teachers who want to teach in public schools often don’t have the option of keeping their union dues instead of funding political causes. This helps to explain the union’s incentive to grow the public sector workforce, even if the growth in spending does not result in improved outcomes for taxpayers.”

"right to work is wrong".co m Well for a welfare addicted republican parrot , regular people would think that you would be grateful for the rights and dignity afforded all workers by the efforts of unions and their members ! But your constanrt denial of FACTS comes as NO SURPRISE since you have never had a job much less a union job ! Most would think that you, being supported by the taxes of hard working people would at least acknowledge that unions have benefited all labor ! To be so unthankful is truly a republican trait !"we are ohio ".co m

We are Ohio. co m And just who and how many does your republican super PAC's represent ?? We don't know because they, unlike unions, don't have to report those donatiions !If it sounds a little fishy you can bet it smells a whole lot fishy !And still regardless of all your efforts workers will have the choice whether to CHOOSE to work union or CHOOSE to work non union which does make it voluntary !Different but the same idiocy so we will remind the vast majority that thumped SB5 that this is just the republicans again trying to screw labor !
