Yes absolem they have and much like republicans they know who is buttering their bread ! Point is we have enough to keep us busy right here at home without financing their whole country ! Heres a novel idea , don't spend one more dollar for any other country for one year and use that money to fix our roads and bridges , feed the hungry here , etc,etc ! I think the world would still be there in a year and we would be better for it !

OWO...have you ever heard the song "what a friend we have in Jesus"? Well we have a friend in Isreal. Isreal has voted with us 94% of the time at the U.N. no other country shares that record. In addition of the 3 billon..give or take.that give them 75% is spent on American goods by law. Also for our investment well have received 50 to 80 billion of intelligence, research and captured weapon technology. To put it into perspective...we give Afghanistan 4 times that amount as well as a laundry list of other countries including Russia. The list also includes many countries that currently serve as a safe - haven and training ground for our and the world's adversaries. They have a healthy gdp and could surely survive without us...but do you really wish to survive without them?

It would be as if Canada and Mexico were bent on our destruction and shot at us daily

I admire the Israelis, they are up against it every single day while we sit here in relative safety and bytch about the world.

BERIGHT it's amazing to me how far the left will go, Israel is a great ally a stable same democracy in the Middle East which surely deserves our support

Nothing personal but their time has come . they are big boys now and much like the oil industry here , they need to go it alone without our money !

If they do it will not play well for them. I never understood the anti Israel stance of a lot of Dems when a lot of thier benifactors or indeed Jewish

Kunectdots, say his name two more times and you will open up that can that does not need opening. with that said, you are correct that any immediate financial savings will not be realized and all of the personel will be absorbed in some fashion. while reading a condensed version of the history of Gitmo (which would be a good read btw) one will find that it is a valuable asset that would be a mistake to lose. up until 1991, the base at Guantánamo was simply a naval base. naturally i am certain that it was used for purposes other than just docking ships. it did not become a prison until 1991. closing Gitmo in the hopes to curry favor from our enemies is a costly folly at best. enemies are enemies for a reason. perhaps our history buffs will advise when a country has been attacked based solely upon a prison. even germany was not thwarted because of their concentration camps. truthfully, we have saved money in that the lease checks we send the government of cuba have never been cashed.

absolem - I also failed to point out that, if we rid ourselves of every detainee in custody at Gitmo, the financial savings impact to the American public will not be significant.

The "employees" stationed there will just be moved to other duties throughout the world.

Where's ohwiseone's snide remarks like I'm "thinking like a Republican businessman"?

Originally should have been between 2-3%. But I expanded the number of decimal places during the calculation which changed to 3%.

Oddly enough, the cost of operating gitmo just happens to almost equal the amount of additional funds that the president promised to Jordan. The total amount that will be given is between 3% of Jordans total gdp.

Obama's supporters want to close down Guantanamo using the costs of it's operation as a supporting reason. All the while they leave out the factor that we are currently paying the same 2000 U.S. employees to guard/service one-fourth of the total number of prisoners that the same number of employees used to guard/service.

It would seem a good business strategy to have reduced the number of employees, proportionately, to the number of detainees. It's effect would have defused the claim that each one of the prisoners costs us X-amount of million dollars per year to detain.

But those kinds of moves would have offset a portion of Obama's argument to close up the place. OH WHAT A STRATEGIST HE IS!
