Is there ever a point where we need to quit trying to "understand" people who do bad things?

I was recently reading about a story in California about these guys who kept a 15 year old girl locked in a box when she wasn't being forced to work on there drug farm. Odds are they will be found guilty and thrown in jail but is that just? While I am for justice and fairness, isn't shouldn't there be a certain line you just don't cross unless you will be required to forfeit your life?

That Arias guy in Cleveland is another case. Don't let him plead out and get life in prison. What he did was evil and society would be better off just to take outside and put a bullet in his head and be done with it.

To clarify, I am talking about our system that can take years or even decades to ever find a person guilty and dish out their punishment. It's a system where we try to "understand" the ppl committing the crime to such an extent that no justice is given out. Years ago, some guys out west dragged a man to death behind their truck till he died just because he was black. Honestly, I don't want to know why they did it. I rather have seen them tied to the back of some trucks and dragged till they died.
