Legalize Marijuana in Ohio?

In light of some recent and not so recent events, do you believe that marijuana SHOULD become a legal substance in the state of Ohio? I'm posting this under "National Politics" because I believe your answer transcends Ohio's borders.

So, what drive brought alcohol back to the streets of America, from Prohibition?

People were getting a buzz on anyway, even though alcohol was illegal and it's illegality was creating lots of organized crime syndicates.

Do those conditions remind you of a substance we are discussing here?

Tiredofit - I'm not being argumentative with you, but when you say, "I get very angry with stoners that want it legalized to get high when it could be of great use to sick and dying people.", YOU DO realize that "stoners" are already actively using it to get high in numbers of millions in this country?

So, keeping it illegal accomplishes...???

Eeeew, a "domestic call", those are the worst. You might be "QUICKLY eradicated by others and be destroyed."

But my bet is you're sitting in front of your tube, flubbing your dub.

Easy to identify the MJ driver, they are the ones driving slow and careful. Obama has come out saying it's no worse than alcohol, while in reality it is a lot better. Thousands a year die from alcohol poisoning, while ODing on pot doesn't have much of a record and if there were the OD's would make news. Remember more people have died in Ted Kennedy's backseat than by overdosing on pot.

Yet, some (many actually) who support legalization of marijuana, and complain about the "Millions spent on the failed War on Drugs, still think throwing BILLIONS on the failed "War on Poverty!" How's that working out.

Here's my concession. I fully support legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, with one caveat. That the same level of scrutiny be given on each case as is supposedly given by medical personnel for cases where narcotic derivatives are prescribed. If it's legalized for anyone, require drivers to submit to the same substance abuse testing standards as commercial drivers are subject to. Because, if I'm a danger to the road with trace amounts of marijuana in my system as a trucker, John P. Stoner is just as much a danger to public safety.

Don't we already have enough folks out on the road unable to safely operate a motor vehicle?

YES FRED! We do have a consensus. But I'm not beyond believing that once it's legalized EVERYWHERE, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, etc. would have investments in controlling much of the highest quality herb available (patent rights?). THE BIG BOYS ALWAYS COME OUT ON TOP.

The guy ended up getting jail time too but not for the weed, it was for a 22 rife they found when they kicked in his door.

Last summer the local police arrested a fellow just a few houses down the road from me for growing the stuff. The helicopter flew in a circle above the neighborhood at treetop level for at least 40 minutes while the half dozen or more trucks and cars went up and down the road zeroing in on the place. It scared the heck out of the whole neighborhood and cost god knows what to catch this guy, he only had only 1 plant. What a waist of manpower.

asknot - Again, we have to take into consideration forces that don't want it legalized because they are profiting from it's illegality.

Legalize it and you'd take away some of their income structure.

I believe the people that still support a war against the legalization of marijuana would agree that, if enough money was thrown at it, someone could prevent the sun from rising tomorrow morning.

Then, when the sun rises anyway, they'd reason that "WE JUST NEED TO THROW EVEN MORE MONEY AT 'THE PROBLEM'".

Folks, it is and has been for a long time, EVERYWHERE. IT will always be. When someone can grow something in their closet, you'll fight it FOREVER.

Legalize it and take the vast majority of the 'problems' surrounding it away.

I hope so but my reason for thinking it should be legal is more liberty based. I think we have spent to much time and money and destroyed to many lives punishing people for nothing more than wanting to relax and maybe have a little fun while not harming anyone but themselves. Our police could be better utilized elsewhere.

asknot, I knew that it was showing great promise in fighting seizures and that is was effective in helping ease pain and the nausea of chemotherapy but I had no idea it was being used to cure cancer. That little girls story was amazing.

You've beaten something, OK. If you don't quit that, you'll go blind! At least that's what my Scout Master told me. LOL
