When have we culturally "arrived"?

In any movement, there is always a moment when one should be able to say that we as a culture have arrived at the end and equality is achieved. This goes for everything from women's rights, minority rights and also rights of the LGBT community. When does such a movement for equality say mission accomplished?

The growth is steady and will rise. It's only logical.

Change comes to all places and at all times. It would be ignorant to think that change does not come.

The population growth of African Americans is up 10% and Asian Americans is up 31%.

As stated before, diversity is a way of thinking.

There was one man a long time ago that spoke a great deal and changed the world forever. He even broaden diversity for everyone because he did not exclude anyone.

Diversity isn't just about an even mixing of skin color...it's a way of thinking. There are neighborhoods in Cleveland that are nearly 50/50 white and black but they are not diverse because they do not have an open mind to differences. The Mid Ohio Valley does however.

@Fred- I am sure with your years of experience you can see quite a change in the region in the last few decades.

Back in 1997 we had an issue between blacks and whites around PHS and while all the hatermonging people tried to get everyone fired up...it turned out to be much ado about nothing. Why? Because the younger people simply do not care about racial tensions like the older people tend to.

Even from a cultural standpoint the area has grown; theater, dance and art all have made significant growth.

When the fracking companies come, more people from outside our area will be moving here and bringing their way of thinking. A influx of growth from Maryland will ensure more diversity in the population as well.

From the time I was young to now, we have population has expanded on all sides of the spectrum with it comes to minorities. Thanks to businesses like Bureau of Public Debt, the rise of WVU-P and even the growth in Athens...the region is growing in diversity. Rather slowly but still growing.

Even in political diversity it is growing. There was a time that WV was a solid blue state and the Republicans had no place here but that has changed.

From a percentage pov, the Mid Ohio Valley has one of the highest populations of LGBT in the nation. I think San Fransisco is the only area higher.

And of course Fred one must consider that there will always be people that simply know of no other way to be but closed minded and ignorant about the direction our culture is taking.

The nation is growing more and more diverse. Even in our area we are seeing more minority groups and a rise in the LGBT community. For the most part, the citizens of the Mid-Ohio Valley have been quite receptive.

As for race baiting, it is an easy thing to do and get offended by. That alone will make it an easy tool for those that have no real arguments.

@Fred- well, I wouldn't go that far. There will always be people that don't like others simply because they are different in some way. But when the majority of people accept that different groups as equal and the vocal minority of haters and such finally turn quiet from shame...then we may have arrived.

Of course Greek, there is also a somewhat pseudo-movement for Non-Hispanic European Americans. Now that "white" people are no longer the majority in the US but the largest minoirty, there are those that feel that their rights may get trampled on. Mostly I do not see it happening anytime soon.

Well, we can hope most of us are a little more polite and open minded to have a discussion of this type.

One thing for sure. If you try to point out a different perspective, the white guys on here will not hesitate to label you even if your skin is darker than theirs !!!

In regards to the African American Civil Rights Movement, you have people like Jesse Jackson that seem to never want the movement to end or even keep conflict up just to keep the movement moving.

Does a movement require the generation that fostered it to pass on for it to finally reach it's conclusion?

I was thinking about this topic when some family members mentioned that Disney was going to feature their first lesbian couple on the show "Good Luck Charlie". When we start seeing couples of that type on children's shows, does that mean equality was completed or just another step forward in the movement?
