Are the Second Amendment "rights" of Americans really being "threatened" - or is this complaint just another gimmick to get the right-wing, reactionary base "fired up" for 2012?

Well Bob, if you're not going to do it, I guess I'll have to ... Some of today's "pretend patriots" might want to look at what is happening in Egypt ... A real "revolution" isn't pretty ... Some Americans, however, are claiming that President Obama and his administration are "tyrants", and (in the words of failed Nevada Senatorial candidate Sharron Angle) "Second Amendment Solutions" might be needed ... Is she right? Or is she just "right-wing"? Inquiring minds want to know!

I think you need to consider the context of where Scalia feels handguns are "adequate." The "where" would be a highly populated urban area like Washington DC. I'd agree, using a rifle for self defense in an urban area would result in rounds flying beyond the walls of your home, unless you're using frangible ammo.

You'd also want to avoid using shotgun slugs as well. And, of course, "ball" ammo (full metal jacketed). Both would go through most home walls, maybe even brick and concrete block combination walls.

Mod, Scalia also says that firearms "in common use" can't be banned by governments. The AR style rifle is "in common use" in our country.

I realize the context he was using referred to semi-auto pistols, which Washington DC had banned, but the argument remains the same.

I would suppose he used the term "Assault Weapon" to define both semi-auto and fully automatic firearms because the term was used in arguments in the case. I frankly don't believe SCOTUS justices are any more well versed in firearms than the anti-gun legislators seeking to ban guns.

It's pretty sad when legislators seeking to ban "high capacity" magazines don't understand what they're talking about.

They can't seem to "restrict" alien invaders or foreign produced narcotics "from coming into the USA !"

Munster, please tell us what evidence you can site in order to SUBSTANTIATE your claim that "they will restrict them all from coming into the USA !"

Munster, you are the one that needs to think for yourself.. Do you not remember how the Affordable Helath care act was passed with backdoor politics and covert promises? And we are also looking at the UN's own worldwide weapons bans so YOU had better start listening to the "nutjobs" that you so like to make fun of before you lose all your rights to th UN.!!

Munster

I don't think that that will matter , they will restrict them all from coming into the USA !

moderation: everyone, including Scalia, needs to be called out when not using correct terms. Just like the post below mine with Munster and the Banning assault weapons, one need to make the distinction between semi and full auto.

Munster

And still you just refuse to get it !!! No ones doing away with your second amendment rights ,If they were I'd be fighting !! They are trying to restrict assault weapons !!! And trying to use this as a steppin stone for all weapons has not happened in the past and it wont happen now but you go ahead and keep listening to your right-wing crap factories and let them fill your head full of nonsense ! After Kennedy was assassinated the sale of military surplus rifles through the mail was halted and yet we still can buy these legally !

MY RESPONSE to LTtE "Regarding God and AR-15s" (Parkersburg News & Sentinel 4-7-13).

Random21 - I'm glad to see you've already discovered and revealed the AR-15 'ERROR' in John Bryan's "Regarding God and AR-15s" LTTE (4-7-13).

For those that want to view the info for themselves, go to; h ttp://w ww.thegunzone.c om/11april86.html

Mr. Bryan is using an THE NAME AR-15, in 'error', like Barack Obama used THE FUNCTION "fully-automatic", in 'error', like Colorado Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette describing THE USE of a firearm's magazine being limited to one time, was in 'error'.

I can't speak for any of you, but I don't care for those that want to alter MY rights BEING WRONG with THEIR understanding of the issue but still fighting for their position FROM ramparts MADE OF 'ERROR'.

beright- I believe scj scalia uses the term 'assault weapon' to define both varieties of weapons. he must'a missed a class.

And again, until you put together a searchable list of the mentally ill most likely to go off the deep end and commit an atrocity, universal registration is a feel good legislation at the most.

I was watching some of the Cable Gab Fests on Sunday morning. The pro-control people use the word assault style weapons when talking about semi and full automatic. I finally figured out that they either- one: did not know what they were talking about or- two: they were purposely misleading. We need to start to use words that more aptly describe the weapons. I think we make everyone use the words automatic or semi-automatic and make sure they know the difference. Assault “style” weapons, as far as I can tell, come in both flavors. You want to band fully automatic, I guess I could get on board with that since I think fully auto is restricted to special permits already. But banning semi-automatic could very well morph itself into banning the sale of hand guns since a six shooter is a semi-automatic weapon. CNN reported that both Bloomberg and BO both recently miss-spoke on this subject. Al Franken continues to be MIA on this subject.
