Waterford’s Jones bros. both surpass 1,000 rushing yards
WATERFORD — Friday night’s 55-0 win over Belpre was special for Waterford, and not just because the Wildcats secured an 8-2 record and the No. 5 seed in the Region 23 playoffs.
The Wildcats saw two of their players, brothers Colten and Hayden Jones, eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark.
Hayden Jones had already checked that box the previous week. He had just one carry for 4 yards against Belpre to give him 171 carries, 1,052 yards and 18 touchdowns in the regular season.
Colten Jones had a huge night Friday, rushing 17 times for 260 yards and five touchdowns, putting him at 130 carries, 1,010 yards and 13 TDs for the season.
“That was a pretty sweet moment,” said Waterford head coach Eric McCutcheon. “I don’t think that’s ever happened at Waterford, to have two 1,000-yard rushers as brothers in the same season. Couldn’t happen to two better boys.”
The Wildcats turn their attention to postseason play, with a first-round home game against Fairbanks set for 7 p.m. Friday.
If Waterford wins, and Fort Frye defeats Buckeye Trail, it would set up a rivalry showdown in the regional quarterfinals the following week in Beverly.
